Student Achievement
We are proud of the accomplishments our students achieve. The Department recognizes students every year through The Ruth Lynch Kernodle Award and the Virginia Purtle Award for Outstanding Student Research. Students can also receive a $500 stipend to conduct research on a culture other than their own through the Lea Pellett Scholarship Travel Award.

The Ruth Lynch Kernodle Award
Given annually by the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work and awarded to the graduating seniors who best exemplify the traits of academic excellence, service, and leadership.
The 2007 winners were Katy Holland (Social Work) and Maria Mancuso (Sociology). The 2006 winners were: Tremetris Davis (Social Work) and Justin Yates (Sociology).
The 2005 winner was: Melissa Romich (Social Work). The 2004 winners were: Mandy Laibstain (Social Work) and Angela Vest (Sociology).

The Virginia Purtle Award for Outstanding Student Research
Given annually by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology for outstanding achievement in student research.
The 2007 winners were Elizabeth Stevens and Christina Green. The 2006 winners were Jamie Seagraves and Justin Yates. The 2005 winners were Ashley Thompson and Nora Barrett.

Highlights of other student accomplishments
Jaso Smith won 2nd place in the annual student paper competition sponsored by the Virginia Social Science Association in 2006 and Carissa Kopp won 1st place the previous year. Great Work!
Lynanne Hodges won a 2006 Research Support Grant of $775 from the Honors Program. The award offset the costs of undertaking her individual research project for senior seminar: "Exploring Present Attitudes of College Students Toward Extra-Relational Affairs."
The Office of Student Activities began an Annual Student Leadership Awards Night in 2006. Justin Yates was honored for the Campus-Wide Program of the Year award, as well as the Dean's Service Award. Lynanne Hodges also received recognition with the Drive for Excellence Award and a Dean's Service Award.

Lea B. Pellett Scholarship Travel Award
This award was established to recognize the distinguished career of Professor Pellett, a leader in cross-cultural and experiential education.
The 2006/2007 recipient is Jennifer Dierberger. The 2005/2006 recipient is Ashley Kurpiel.
The 2004/2005 recipient, Lynanne Hodges, used the funding to travel to Australia. She presented her research findings at the Paideia Conference in a presentation entitled, "The reconstruction of Australian aboriginal communities."

Campus-wide conferences and funding opportunities:
Several students present their research projects every year at the annual Paideia Conference during the Spring semester. Visit www.cnu.edu/ugrc for a list of student presentations and an application for next year's conference.
Students can also apply to receive funding to work on research projects through the Undergraduate Summer Research Award. Contact Dr. Dorothy Doolittle, Associate Provost for Research and Graduate Studies, for more information. |
